For our next look at the inspirations for semantic web innovation, we spoke with Michael Oskofsky, co-founder and chief innovation officer of NetBase. (See the first in the series here.) As we reported here, NetBase is the creator of the semantic search technology that powers tools including ScienceBase, HealthBase and most recently ConsumerBase, to help researchers in the scientific, medical, and CPG spaces, respectively, harness the wealth of content and social media commentary on the web for insights. Earlier this month it announced that it has raised $9 million in venture capital funding, completing its Series C round with Altos Ventures and Thomvest Ventures Inc.

You might say NetBase was inspired by a young engineer’s disappointment: Some time ago, Oskofsky was a passionate employee of Ariba in its earlier days as a B-to-B marketplace, and saw a project he’d worked on for a year get the axe. Looking back, he understands that that kind of thing happens all the time in the business world, but at the time it fueled his determination “to not see that happen to any work I did or any other engineer did.” So he headed for MIT’s Sloan School of Management to learn how to do innovation the right way. There he learned that innovation is a successful combination of understanding the needs of consumers and customers, and understanding what new technologies and inventions are available that might be applied in interesting ways to address those needs.

You won’t find it on Verizon.com, but Engadget reports that Verizon is instructing its staff to let Apple iPad owners know that Verizon’s MiFi can provide great 3G service without paying extra money for one of the 3G iPad models.

Although Verizon’s 3G unlimited data plan (really 5GB per month) costs twice as much as AT&T’s no-contract monthly fee for 3G, Verizon’s 3G network has a larger footprint. And, the MiFi can provide any WiFi enabled device with 3G data. This means you can use it with any netbook, notebook, and most smartphones in addition to the iPad. The MiFi can provide 3G data to up to 5 WiFi devices simultaneously. The MiFi 2000 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot is priced at a very reasonable $49.99 if you sign a two-year contract ($60 per month fee for 3G service).

Some of you might remember the days when self-winding watches were common. These watches were great. Instead of winding a stem or a battery to power watch gears, all you needed to do was walk around or swing your arm (or just the watch) to power the watch. What could be easier? It looks like Nokia is bringing that old concept into the 21st century by actually generating electricity instead of simply gear motion.

Personally, I’m still waiting for the Potenco to appear although it appears that it is, unfortunately, vaporware.

T-Mobile USA Says They Ditched Yahoo For Google Because Consumers Demanded It

T-Mobile’s web2go portal is available on 94% of phones sold by T-Mobile. So, this is an across-the-board change (not just one device). T-Mobile’s switch makes a lot more sense to me than AT&T’s. In the quoted words of a T-Mobile exec: if the consumers say they like Google, we’ll give it to them. That seems like a good reason to me.
